Boxedup Relaunch in Beta State

Well it’s taken a bit longer than anticipated, but as they say ‘good things come to those who wait’. We will be launching our new site very soon, with the beta site being rolled out over the next few weeks.

Please Note – Current Site Usage

We have to move (literally) millions of products, lists and users to the new system and sadly we will need to ‘lock’ the databases during this migration.

What this means is that anything you add to your lists from today will not appear on the new site. Next week we will release the beta site to you all, and you can start to use the new site to update your lists! (the old site will still be available for a short time just in case).

Once you get access to the site next week the first thing you will notice is the totally new design. This provides a nice new interface for the really clever stuff which come from a complete rebuild from the ground up. This means we can update the site more often and more easily so over the coming months there are a number of improvements planned.

Our objective stays the same though – we want to give you the best service for keeping track of the things that you want to get, whether you’ve found those things on boxedup or on any store on the web. Now that we’ve got past a lot of the hard work getting the new site prepared, we have more time to keep in touch, so expect to see more of us here on our blog and on twitter too.

We’ll publish blog posts with hints a tips on using the new site, but we hope you will all find it easy to use. Some new features you’ll notice are the improved searching functions, price comparisons and of course (after being the top voted request on our feedback!) a print list function 🙂

We really do want to hear from you, whether it’s the good, the bad, or the ugly! If you like good, old fashioned, email then get in touch using support at or through the boxedup twitter account, so if you’re a twitter enthusiast then give us a follow to keep up-to-date with developments, or just @ us if you want to let us know anything.

boxedup February update (new add-form beta, Facebook app, iGoogle gadget, the mission……)

The year’s racing by already and since we’ve been busy we thought it was time to say hello and give you an update:

  • we’ve been working on improving HOW YOU ADD PRODUCTS to your lists (so a small window opens on the page, making it easier to grab info you need); so if you’re up for trying new things then go to; it’s still ‘beta’ right now (in a good state, but not perfect yet), so if you come across any issues please let us know!

    boxedup beta product add form

  • we’ve been working on our FACEBOOK APP, which we had some issues with; this is all fixed (sorry it took some time to get done), so if you’re a Facebooker you can add the app and connect your account here; if you’ve already added the app then you’ll probably need to reconnect your account when you next visit (it’s quick and easy!); you can add the boxedup app to your profile using the button on the main list view page
  • we’ve also now got an IGOOGLE GADGET for the iGoogle fans, so you can keep track of your lists and what your boxedup friends are up to from your iGoogle page – add it from here

         boxedup igoogle gadget

And our mission to help you organize your online shopping, and get the most out of the experience, continues. So that includes:

  • HELPING YOU FIND OTHER PLACES TO BUY THE PRODUCTS YOU’VE ADDED to your list (based on where other boxedupers have found the product, and also stores we’ve found it at); click the product name link or the ‘Check prices & talk’ link on your list to go to the product page, and if we know of other places it’s available it’ll be shown in the "Shops found at" section (we’re working on improving our coverage, so this is work in progress)
  • HELPING YOU SHARE YOUR REVIEWS AND RECOMMENDATIONS on products you’ve got with your boxedup friends and the rest of the community using our ‘talk’ section on the product page (you’ll find a new ‘Review this’ link on your ‘Things I have’ list); and we’ll be making it easy to share your reviews and recommendations with your Facebook and Twitter friends, if that’s your thing!

We’ve got plenty planned for the year ahead, helping you find the best prices and offers available, and letting you share your experiences with products (and with shops you use), as well as continuing to improve the process of giving and receiving things (avoiding waste and unwanted stuff in the process). So keep your comments and feedback coming (just use the feedback tab over on the left of the boxedup site)!

What’s hot on boxedup in the Christmas run-in!

As a service that’s all about online shopping and helping people keep track of things they want to get (from any store on the web), we’re always interested in looking at the trends around what’s being added to boxedup lists.

So we were taking a look at what’s hot in the Christmas run-in, based on the thousands of products adding to boxedup lists during that time, and thought we’d share it. So here are the latest movers and shakers, both as a whole and in the gadget category.

1. Cash (it is, afterall, king, and there’s a definite shortage at the moment!)
2. Nintendo Wii
3. iPhone
4. iPod Touch
5. PlayStation3
6. Lego Ice Brick tray
7. MacBook Pro
8. Wii Fit
9. Sun Jar
10. iTunes gift cards

1. Nintendo Wii
2. iPhone
3. iPod Touch
4. PlayStation3
5. MacBook Pro
6. Amazon’s Kindle reader device
7. Nintendo DS Lite
8. Nikon D80
9. Xbox 360
10. Dell Inspiron Mini 9

If you want to re-publish these lists then you’re welcome, but please credit boxedup and link back to the boxedup homepage!

A couple of interesting trends (apart from the obvious Apple obsession!):
* ‘Netbooks‘ have stormed onto the scene this year, cut-down lap-tops that are way cheaper and smaller than regular laptops, and designed mainly for internet-based use. The Dell Inspiron Mini is a top 10 gadget item, but there are plenty of others in the same category that are on boxedup lists, such as the Acer Aspire One and the Asus EEE. We’re expecting that a lot of these will be opened on Christmas day, since they’re great value for money and really reflect what laptops need to be for most people
* Gift cards are again very popular, with the iTunes gift card being in the top 10 overall, and other top gift cards being from Amazon, Sephora, Ikea, Threadless, Victoria’s Secret, Target and Starbucks

And to satisfy our thirst for data on these trends we’ve redesigned the homepage to show ‘Recently popular products’, which shows where the buzz is around products being added to lists by the boxedup community. So if you want to know what’s popular check it out occasionally! homepage showing recently popular products and team picks

And for our own vanity we’ve created another area homepage section called ‘Team picks’ which is full of things that have been added to the site that the boxedup team thinks are cool, fun, interesting, or whatever!

So if you haven’t got your own boxedup account yet, then sign up now and get your online shopping organised. And start your Christmas list at the same time! And check out our Christmas listing tips and the boxedup Christmas competition (aka ‘the boxedup Christmas bailout’!).

Seasons greetings from the team at boxedup!

Ho! Ho! Ho! Just call us Santa! Announcing the boxedup Christmas prize draw (aka ‘the boxedup Christmas bailout’)

So we’re getting all festive and into the Christmas spirit at boxedup!

And in these days of economic turmoil, and financial prudence, we want to do our bit to spread some Christmas cheer!

So we’re running a CHRISTMAS PRIZE DRAW COMPETITION where we’ll BUY the lucky winner USD750/GBP500/EUR600 (or equivalent) of things from their list (yep, you choose – we want it to be things you really need and want). OK, so it’s not quite a bailout, but it’s our contribution!

Just build your list (sign-up if you haven’t got an account already) and get at least three friends to join boxedup and start using the site and adding things to their lists (just send them an email invite, they need to be connected to your account), and you’ll automatically get entered. Closing date is Tuesday 9th December, and we’ll announce the winner shortly after that!

Good luck!

Christmas 2008 with boxedup: get listing!

Where’s 2008 gone?! Wow, it’s been a bit of a blur.

Christmas is looming large, so now is the time to start getting your thoughts together for when people say “So, what do you want for Christmas?”

And it’s doubly important this year, what with the current economic situation. So to make sure that people buying you things don’t waste their money, and so that you actually get stuff you need and want, just make sure that your boxedup list is in good shape. And get your friends and family onboard so that your money is being equally well spent!

Our mission this year is to eradicate waste and those post-Christmas eBay visits to offload the bloopers that have been received on Christmas Day (no offence eBay folk, but I’m sure you’ll agree that it just makes good sense that people get the stuff that they want in the first place). So instead of a White Christmas, this year we’re aiming for a financially sound, waste-free, Green Christmas!

So here are our boxedup Christmas listing tips:

  • Make sure that your list is up-to-date (and if you’ve got kids create lists for them, and for less online savvy family members too, so they also get given the things that they need and want! You can easily add new lists to your account)
  • Sort your list if there are things on it that are more important than others (click onto the list you want to re-name, then hover over the name and in the drop-down you’ll see an option that says “Re-order this list”)
  • Use the status update to leave a short general comment about your list
  • Add any specific comments on individual items on your list
  • If you want to give your main list a Christmas theme then just re-name it (using the “Edit list name” link in the drop-down); or you can just create a new list (another option in the drop-down: “Create new list”)
  • Make sure the necessary people know about your list! You can invite people to join boxedup using the invite box to the right of your list. Or if for some insane reason they don’t want to join boxedup (!) then email them the list URL for them to take a look (they won’t be able to use the reserve functionality, so they’ll just need to let you know if they’re getting you something from the list, and you can then move it off your main list)
  • Decide if you want to maintain the element of surprise! You’ll find a section in Settings called “Surprises”. Just check that and you won’t see if things on your list are being reserved (when you’re logged-in)
  • And to reserve things for people on their list, just make sure that you’re connected as friends and then click the "Reserve" link that’s under each item

So with that you should be all good to go!

Happy Christmas listing, and thanks for using boxedup!

boxedup isn’t just for Christmas! (it’s your year-round shopping & sharing companion)

So the seasonal festivities are now a distant memory, and we’re all well and truly immersed in 2008! We hope that made life a bit easier at Christmas, and thanks to everybody who told us their stories about how it worked for them.

But boxedup isn’t just for Christmas! We’re here for you year-round providing a tool to bring together your online shopping activity, helping you to keep track of what you want, like the look of or are thinking about getting, from any site or store on the web. On top of that we make it easy to share your lists, whether that’s about sharing finds with friends and letting them know what you’re into (on boxedup or on your social network, blog, etc) or making sure that when somebody wants to give you something that you actually get something you want. And we’ll be working on making it easy to find, follow and interact with other boxedup members who are into the same stuff as you, so you can benefit from each other’s finds. And plenty of other things that’ll make boxedup more and more useful to you!

And in the spirit of welcoming in the new year we decided to freshen the site up, so you’ll find a new colour scheme, a bit of homepage make-over, various design tweaks to existing pages, and we’ve introduced a brand new type of page – the product hub page! The product hub page is all about bringing together information from across the site and the community of users in relation to specific products, i.e. who’s added it recently, who’s got it, what else people who want or have that thing have on their lists, etc (if your lists are private or friends only, then if you’ve added a product then you won’t appear). It’s all part of the effort to make connections, both in terms of people who are into similar things as well as in relation to other products and things that might be of interest. So when you click on a product link you’ll be taken to the hub-page, but there’s also a direct link (the arrow icon after the link) to take you off to the external web page if that’s where you want to go.

And if you missed it at the end of last year, we’ve now got the ability to prioritise and sort lists using some cool drag and drop functionality. We’ve also been working on improving the basics such as image grabbing, and we’ve got some good improvements there (as well as the ability to manually add images if we can’t grab them automatically, both by uploading files and based on the URL of the image). And as well as wanting to make boxedup a good social experience, we know that people need to be comfortable with the privacy settings, and we’ll be looking to add to the existing privacy options to give you more control over your account.

So that’s it for now. Here’s to a fulfilling and prosperous year all round, and keep on using! And keep sending that feedback through!

The boxedup team

PS With the 14th Feb looming large, make sure that your loved one doesn’t have to shoot in the dark this year as far as getting you something that your heart desires! Get that list updated, and make sure that they know about it (leave the pc on, open on that page, or something like that; or just make sure that they’re connected as a boxedup friend and can see what you’ve added)!!

Bringing order to your boxedup lists! (and a few other things to make life easier)

This one’s been too long in coming (and has probably been the most requested feature – thanks for all the feedback!), but better late than never!

So after a fair bit of deliberating about the best way to do ordering/sorting/prioritising of the things on your lists, we’ve settled on drag & drop so that you can just put things in priority order.

So when you’re on the list that you want to shuffle the order of you’ll see a new link in the ‘Things to do’ box (which is to the right of the list, at the top) called ‘Re-order this list’. So just click on that and the re-order page will open up (see screenshot below). Then all you need to do is left-click on ‘drag’ next to the item that you want to move, and then just drag it to the position that you want it to be in on the list.

Here’s what the re-order page looks like, and the link to open this page has the red arrow pointing at it: re-order page screenshot

So drag and drop away, and get those lists in order!

We’ve also added a few other links to the ‘Things to do’ box to make various things easier and more obvious. These include links to edit the list name and to create a new list. And we’ve added a link to this blog so that you can easily check on what’s new at any time when you come to the site.

We’re always working to improve the site, so if you have any thoughts or comments just drop us a message through the message box on the help & info form, or through the messaging system on the site (we’re at the top of your address list!).

That’s all for now!

boxedup seasonal tips – helping to ensure you get all the things you really want!

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and all that jazz! So we thought that we’d better give a few last-minute tips about how to get the most out of during this festive period.

A lot of those carefully compiled boxedup lists of the things that you want to get, from anywhere on the web, are now swinging into action as gift lists, and we hope you get all the things that you’ve been yearning for! So if you need to let people know about the existence of your list then make sure that you send them a boxedup friend invite, and they can then go through it and reserve the thing that they want to get you (we don’t want you getting two of those things that you’ve always wanted, and only your friends can reserve things on your lists!).

And if you’ve been slacking a bit with your boxedup lists then freshen them up and share them out to avoid disappointment. It’s not too late – last minute shopping is a habit of many, and they’ll only thank you if you can lay out on a plate what it is that you’d love to get (and they won’t waste any money on getting you something that will find its way straight into a cupboard or onto ebay!).

Now, we know that the whole element of surprise is really important to a lot of people, and if you’re one of them we’ve recently built a feature into the boxedup lists that you’ll like. In Settings (the link is at the top of the page on the right, when you’re logged in), you’ll find a section called ‘Surprises’ – just check that box and then when somebody reserves something on your list you won’t see the ‘reserved’ message appear (but people visiting your lists will be able to see what has and hasn’t been reserved). OK, so it won’t be a total surprise, but it maintains some of the suspense!

So we hope you have a great festive season, and that you get all those things you really want!

And it just remains to say thanks for using boxedup – we hope you’ve been enjoying it! We’re always working hard to make it better, so if you have any feedback then we’d love to hear it. Please either send it through the help & info form or by emailing us at

It’s been heads-down at boxedup!

OK. We know we’ve neglected the blog since boxedup launched (sorry), but it’s been for good reasons, we promise!

We’ve been working continuously on enhancing existing functionality and adding new useful features and tools. So here’s a quick summary.

When you click through to your account you’ll see that you’ve now got a new homepage so you can easily see who’s finding and adding what in your network, and there’s a refined profile page so that people visiting your boxedup account can get a quick view of what you’re into. There’s a new messaging system so you can easily send messages to your boxedup friends when you’re on the site (and want to talk product stuff). And you can also now leave your funny or helpful comments on your friends lists. Lists now have three settings as far as privacy levels are concerned: public, friends only, fully private; so you control who sees what. And there’s also a new tool that allows you to easily send out boxedup invites by pulling in contacts directly from your address book.

We’ve extended the shops functionality to the user level, so on your pages you’ll see a shops tab which shows all the shops that you have things from on your lists. We’ll be working to build this out further; ultimately we want it to be a place where you can keep track of all your favourite stores and sites, be able to see when good stuff from those sites has been added to boxedup by others, and to be able to see who else is enjoying using the same sites and stores as you.

And we’ve been working to make it easy to embed your boxedup lists into the places that you use and love most on the web, whether that’s your blog, your social network profile or somewhere else. So we’ve now got  a boxedup Facebook app (see pic below) and a new set of Flash widgets to plug into your blog or MySpace profile, or any other open social network or site that accepts Flash (see the skinny version over on the left and the fat version below). There are a load of announcements in the pipeline about other social networks opening up and following the Facebook lead, so as that happens we’ll be looking at what the best way is to integrate boxedup into these platforms.

boxedup facebook app (profile view) - click to install the app      boxedup flash widget (front view) - click to create a widget

boxedup Facebook app (profile view)      boxedup Flash widget

So whether you’re using boxedup as your online shopping list, to help you keep tabs on stuff as you’re window shopping on the web, to track stuff you want to get for others, as your gift/wish list, or to just share cool things that you’ve found with friends, we hope you like the latest changes!

There’s plenty more to come, including a new form for adding products to your list which will have new standard options to allow you to grab images when we haven’t been able to grab them automatically (and we’ll be working on the automatic image grab too) – we know it’s annoying when you can’t get the image that you want.

We’ve been getting a great flow of feedback from lots of people, and it’s really appreciated. So if you’ve got any thoughts or comments about the site, or if you just want to get in touch, then please do! You can use the feedback form on the help and info page or you can email us on feedback [at] boxedup dot com.

And we’ll definitely be making more frequent posts about developments and changes as we make them!

So thanks for using the site. And if this is your first time coming to boxedup please sign-up!
